Purchased as a half finished pair of ugly houses on a compromised site around a very large plane tree, the project was part refurbishment part cosmetic surgery to create a single sensational courtyard house over 8000 sqft with vast series of living spaces on the ground floor arranged around a large central courtyard – home to the tree. Located in 4-6 st mary abbots place, london UK, this single courtyard house was designed by Michaelis Boyd Associates for Benchlevel Properties.
The existing basement was reconfigured to create a swimming pool with shafts of daylight brought through sunpipes. An elliptical sculptural staircase rises from the ground floor up to the bedroom accomodation above under a large rooflight. Materials are simple and used in honest details to create clean modern spaces.
